Choose the Right Gas Fireplace Logs for Your Home

Gas fireplace logs are an excellent alternative to wood logs if you already have a gas fireplace starter. Gas logs are available in vented or ventless versions. At their core, both kinds of gas logs are the same - they have gas lines that release gas flames and are made from concrete logs that are molded and painted to mimic the appearance of real wood. Many models also feature embers to enhance the experience of viewing a gas fire. There are key differences, however.

Vented Gas Logs

Although gas logs don't produce smoke, vented gas logs require a fireplace with a working chimney and an open flue. Vented fireplaces produce gas fires with higher flames and a more realistic flame pattern. They produce less heat, however, because most of it travels up the chimney. These logs use slightly more gas than ventless models, but can be used for longer periods of time.

Ventless Gas Logs

Ventless gas logs have a smaller flame that looks less realistic, but they produce more heat. Building codes usually classify them as heat sources. Check your local building codes before purchasing one because they're illegal in some states and cities. Ventless gas logs increase the moisture in your home and reduce the oxygen, so they can only be used for an hour or so before you need to open a window to allow more air into the room.

With both versions, you can choose log sets that are only intended to be viewed from the front, or sets that can be used with dual-sided fireplaces, peninsula fireplaces, and island fireplaces. Before making your purchases, confirm that it is designed for use with your fireplace. You should also measure the firebox to make sure you buy the right size log set.

Unlike older gas fireplace logs, newer models produce a more realistic fireplace experience without the hassle of ash, smoke, and real wood. Now you can enjoy a fire year-round with just the touch of a button.
